In the summer of 1940, England stood alone against the onslaught of the
conquering Wehrmacht after it had overrun nearly all of Europe. But England’s
fate was not to be decided on land or through the seas, but rather in the skies
above. For it was here an epic battle would be waged between the outnumbered and
exhausted RAF and the victory-laden Luftwaffe. This struggle would forever be
known as the Battle of Britain.
Black Cross/Blue Sky: The Battle
of Britain is a game designed to allow players to recreate some of the
aerial battles fought over England during that summer. Each player assumes the
role of a Flight Leader as they maneuver their groups of planes across a game
board, made up of a hexagonal grid superimposed upon a map representative of the
terrain, over which the battles took place.
This game is a new rendition
of a miniature wargame first published in 1995. Over the years, the rules system
has been polished and refined. Now, this rules system is presented in a new
format. This game is the first in a series using the new 3-D game system which
allows players to use either counters or miniatures with this game. Miniature
gamers can now practice some scenarios using the counters as they are painting
up their squadrons. Also, there are new planes types, new advanced rules, eleven
scenarios (including one solitaire). An upcoming supplement will add three
mini-campaign games, and one huge campaign game that covers the entire second
half of the Battle of Britain.
So strap into the cockpit, put on your
helmet, and check your parachute. There is a whole lot of action in the blue
skies above!
